A forum for laboratory medicine
SULM is bound to exchange all information relating to clinical laboratory pathology, commonly referred to as laboratory medicine in Europe, with official agencies and professional circles. Thus, SULM actively contributes to constructive discussions in health care. A major concern of SULM is efficient and prosperous laboratory medicine within all sub-specialties, aims which are achieved using the following elements:
Members of SULM work with various projects at national and international levels
The Swiss Medlab congress is held every 4 years with international attendence
Public Relation, e.g. with exhibits at congresses as well as position papers regarding research and development in clinical pathology laboratories, and international marketing
As a Society SULM is charged for an efficient and patient-oriented laboratory medicine with adherence to international good laboratory practice (GLP) procedures.
Standpoint Currently, laboratory medicine takes a special position in health care. Ever since the human genome has been cloned, the diagnostic possibilities have grown into an enormous number of possibilities for better patient care. SULM, the Swiss Union of Laboratory Medicine, has aimed at making Laboratory Medicine in diagnosis and prevention as a public concern with a full integration in patient care. Education and information about the need for laboratory medicine is actively pursued to underline the importance of this field in public perception.
Foundation SULM was founded in 1990 as an umbrella organization of all Swiss Societies with medical-biological laboratory activities. The foundation responds to the recommendations of the European Commission for Clinical Laboratory Standards (ECCLS) with its balanced representation of science (Scientific Societies), industry (mainly diagnostics) and public health authorities. As of 2006, to the best of our knowledge, SULM has integrated all relevant societies and associations in the field of health care, of diagnostic industry as well as of administrative bodies in governments and administration departments.
